RandomKSandom series

Released on: 2022-03-07

RandomKSandom is the spiritual successor to FunnyHacks. It’s a series focussing on hardware and software projects that I’m am fascinated by. These are of varying sizes. Most of the software projects will be opensource, although I don’t promise that all of them will be.

With this series I want to push it to the next level, with each episode trying to improve at least one thing from the last. I’ve bought a license with a service that provides music and sound effects that I can put in my videos, and I’m iteratively improving my techniques for recording audio. Video is a similar story, where I’m trying to improve some aspect of the video capture. Eg In the office video, I did some experimentation with motion timelapses so that I could do long exposure on panning shots. Each one of those shots took about 30 minutes to 2 hours to capture. I still have lots of stuff that I want to improve with it, but I definitely got the effect that I was going for.

You may be interested in a blog post I’ve written about the transition from FunnyHacks and what that means for FunnyHacks. The TL;DR is that it will continue as it has been for the last few years with new posts occasionally, and RandomKSandom will be my main focus for the foreseeable future.

I took some time to extend myself with some intellectual challenges. Here's what I've done so far.
Control your computer using a Leap Motion controller, but with an every-day-quality implementation.
If you want to share stable diffusion on your network without exposing any information to the outside world. This is one way to do it.
There's a trick for getting a big speed boost on old hardware that's so easy that I'm surprised I haven't heard people talking about it.
What began as 3 tripods on a hill, and hours per photo, ended with way better results in seconds, hand held.
I accidentally automated Javelining a plane into the ground. And I learnt a huge amount along the way.
Over the last few years, there has been a lot of talk about whether you can make use of the full resolution on a phone with a 4K display. Let's dig in and actually understand this.
I'm stopping my Patreon activity for now. Let's dive a little deeper into why.

I've been in the computer industry for well over two decades. It has changed so much that it is barely recognisable compared to what it was. Most of the changes are for the better. Some are things that we have always sucked at. And some are very much worse. The weCanDoThisBetter series of blog posts is for addressing the areas where we could do better.
