Cubetrix live stream to 8192 - result

Released on: 2024-09-21

I have got to 8192 in Cubetrix once, and over a week ago. So I decided to dedicate some time give it a serious attempt, and live stream it. Meanwhile I showed some tips and techniques for doing well at the game. In this post, I’ll outline what happend.

In case you’re interested, you can see the original announcement. Or you can read more about Cubetrix.

What happened?

Did I achieve it?

No. I got to 4096 (one step down from 8192) at 1:34:00, although I didn’t realise it until 1:34:08, and lost the game at 1:48:59.

I made more attempts, but got progressively more tired, and made more mistakes as time went on.

At 3:30:36 I put up a post-it note in the background saying “FINAL ATTEMPT :)”, and at 3:43:40 I lost the game.

I’m disappointed to have not achieved it. But I’m also glad that I managed expectations from the start (eg 4:54).

What else did I do?

I demonstrated lots of techniques for progressing the board in the way that you want. If you’d like me to put together a blog post covering these, let me know by commenting on the recording.

If there’s a next time…

I will probably make another attempt, because this was quite interesting. But I’m not sure when, so I’ll post here, and as a YouTube post if I do.

If I do, here are some things that I’ll likely do differently:

Don’t talk so much

I’m glad I gave lots of tips and tricks in this one, but it was exhausting.

Having covered all of that in the first one, I’ll probably limit my talking to answering questions, and when I think I have something new and interesting to say. (I’ll still be happy to re-cover anything that I’ve already covered if people ask about it.)

Limit to 2 hours instead of 4

4 hours of talking was too much for me. I over-drained myself, and it would have been much less interesting by the end. 2 hours is also much less daunting for a potential viewer to join.

Maybe break up the achievements into separate streams

This is a game that’s excellent for picking up when you have a few minutes, and putting down when your attention is needed elsewhere. I use it to give my brain a little exercise. It’s also great to put it down after every major achievement and come back with fresh eyes, because the board usually changes a lot in those moments. It’ll also make the stream length much less daunting for people to watch later as well.
